About the Gardens
For over 47 years Tom and Marilyn Hamilton have been gardening at their home in East Rochester New York. The amount of love and the degree of patience and attention to detail invested are evident in the stunning garden scape you will experience when you visit.
The basic plant bones of their gardens are comprised of a large collection of unique and rare species of Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Mountain Laurels, Roses, Spirea, Various Dogwoods and Kousa Dogwoods, Viburnam, Espalier Apple Tree, Silver Korean Fir, Enkianthus, Acer griseum, Chamaecyparis, Boulevard Cyprus and others.
There is a natural flow to the landscape in these gardens that provides year round beauty and interest. Some of the plants are unique hybrids that provide special focus interest, and that draw you into and through the gardens to provide surprise and will surely delight the visitor.
They look forward to hosting your visit to their gardens.
One of the extra special treats in this garden scape are the dry stone walls throughout the property. This is one of the finest examples of dry stone wall work in the area.
The basic structural work to terrance the east and South area of the new property involved excavating over 2,000 cubic yards of sandy soil before beginning a 3 year process of constructing over 1,200 linear feet of retaining walls to support the many terraces as well as provide a switch back path between the old back yard and the new lower back yard of the addition.
This work involved obtaining a miners permit so that they could have unlimited access to some of the local quarries to pick, load and transport over 180 tons of dolomite stone for the majority of the structural retaining walls. They also installed sophisticated drainage and water storage systems to allow all of the rain water to be absorbed back into the earth on the property.
